Junyi is a graduate of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, having studied viola under the tutelage of T’ang Quartet violist Lionel Tan. Starting out on the violin at age 4, Junyi made the switch to viola after falling in love with its warm, earthy tones.

An active performer, Junyi has played with many prominent orchestras in Singapore such as re:sound collective, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Base Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Young Musicians Foundation Orchestra where he served as section leader. He has been on concert tours to places as far as the United Kingdom with the Orchestra of the Music Makers. Besides classical music, Junyi also maintains an interest in contemporary pop music, having played viola for singer-songwriter Inch Chua and sessioned for other recordings.

Over the years, Junyi has had the privilege of being coached by renowned violists such as Garfield Jackson of the Endellion String Quartet and Yizhak Schotten from University of Michigan. As an orchestral musician, he has played under the leadership of renowned musicians like Gabor Takacs, Lan Shui, and Pavlo Beznosiuk.

Beyond the viola, Junyi also plays the electric guitar, having given performances as part of Odyssey Dance Theatre’s musical ensemble.
